,beautiful German shepherd dog, who went to England' with me in >, 1934, could escape.- He used to break every rope, and finally I had to get a cowchain to prevent his following me on the road. I tie him. to the wooden bunk. A few weeks ago in the early morning before the dawn, a wolf chased two deer, or. mooss, I couldn't bo cure which, right at the back' of my shack. It drove the animals into the lake—and T could hear them swimming and splashing up and down. There were dogs c v each side, barking, and the wolf howled. It was my first experience of wolves, and I was very much afraid, I must confess. The howl of a timber wolf is not a cheer-ful,-sound in the middle*of the night in the dark, even with a faithful dog at one's side. • • - ; "Prince., was like a'wild creature, and it took all my power to hold him back. Windows mean nothing to him where a wolf is concerned, he strained and pulled, but if I,let him out my protection; is gone from my side. Standing I erect with his paws on my shoulders, he is much taller than I. and a match I for any danger where it concerns his mistress." , .
