PRIVATE SCHOOLS

QUESTION OF STATE AID

The formation of a Catholic taxpayers' Association, composed entirely- ot laymen, was one of the results of the Catholic education conference held at Adelaide recently in connection with the Centenary celebrations. His Grace Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, who attended the celebrations, returned by the Awatea today. In an interview with a "Post reporter he said that the Catholic part of the celebrations took an educational form, and all matters concerning the education of Catholic children were discussed, and in particular the position of the Catholic schools in the Commonwealth. Delegates were present from all parts of Australia, New Zealand, and 'as far away as Canada. One of the most important results of the conference was the formation of the Catholic taxpayers'; association, which, during the next few years, would take steps to place the position of private schools before the country, with the object of securing part of the taxation paid by Catholics for thenown schools. Catholic schools in Australia were in the same position as they were in New Zealand—they were not subsidised. "In every part of the Bri-, tish Empire, except Australia and New Zealand, State aid is given to private schools, irrespective of the religion," said his Grace. Archbishop O'Shea added that it was possible that a, Catholic taxpayers' association, similar to the one formed in Australia, might be formed in New Zealand.
