ROSE SHOW
DISPLAY AT LOWER HUTT
The Hutt Valley Rose Show was opened this afternoon by his Excellency Viscount Galway. The cadets from the Hutt Valley High School formed a guard of- honour. Though the show as a whole and in many of its features is of great merit the roses this year are somewhat disappointing owing to the unfavourable season. Nevertheless entries are quite good, and many of the blooms are of outstanding quality. The stands for exhibition are of a very high order. Mr. H. J. Poole has this year excelled all previous efforts, and has provided a real beauty spot as a central feature made up mainly of spirea, hydrangeas, and Brazilian tree fern. Mr. E. L. Riddiford has a novel stand of calceolarias, chiefly of the multiftora nana type. The stand shows excellent taste in its layout with moss representing a garden plot. Probably most visitors will spend a considerable time viewing' Mrs. A. R. Gower's novelty stall, which each show becomes more and more a centre of attraction. Just a few of the novelties are lemons of all sizes and shapes from the garden of Mr. E. J. Righton, fine pitcher plants (flycatcher) from Mr. Poole's garden, a large variety of beautiful irises, pseudo panax, New Zealand mistletoe, and other natives, [Australian natives, and a sensitive ' mimosa, callearidras.
The Lower Hutt Borough reserves committee has a fine stand of cut flowers, featuring scarlet manuka; Mr. A. McMillan a stand of trade exhibits of roses; the Rev. S. H. D. Peryman a stand of roses and delphiniums; and Mrs. L. Morrison a stand of decorative work. The flower stall is under the charge of Mesdames Hendry and Wood, and the cake stall in charge of Mesdames E. E. Stoupe and Whitcher. The show will conclude this evening.
