After-Care Association.

A meeting of the Wellington . AfterCare Association was held recently, Mrs. E. J. Moore, J.P., being in the chair. The main business for the afternoon was the planning of a Christmas party to be given to the children of the club early in December. The winning ticket of the competition for the •box of chocolates was number 51. Ncwlands Women's Institute. Adverse weather conditions'did not affect the •attendance vi the recent monthly meeting of (he Mewlands Women's Institute, wiicn Mrs. Hovridge presided. The ■ best-dressed doll compeUti;|i was won by Mrs. Woods, with Mrs. Knight second, and the pikelets competition was won by Mrs. Pritchard, Miss Cornwell being second. The tcacloth worked by members, the material of which was given by Mrs. Kettlewell, was used for the first time on the president's table at afternoon tea time. Apollo Women's Club. The Apollo Women's Club met in the University Women's Club rooms recently. The president welcomed another new member and expressed pleasure at the increasing membership. The evening's entertainment took the form of a lecture by Mrs. Teasdale Billington and Miss Joyce Billington, who gave some very valuable and helpful hints on the care of the hair during different times of the year. A number of the members received a practical demonstration on the art of "make up" and facial treatment. A hearty vote of thanks was extended to both-Mrs. Billington and her daughter for their very instructive lecture. A dainty supper was served by Mrs. Calvert and the Misses Calvert. H.V.L.T.A. Queen Carnival. A combined bridge and "500 evening in connection ,with the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Association's queen carnival was held in Petone Central Pavi-1 lion in aid of the Southern Queen candidate. The ladies' prize was won by Mrs. Smith and the gentlemen's prize by Mr. Annear. Other events are being arranged. Prc-Wedding Party. A happy afternoon was spent at the residence of Mrs. W. Wilson, Knights Boad, Lower Hutt, the occasion being a "pantry tea"* given in honour of her niece, Miss Dorothy Whitelaw, whose marriage to Mr. Errol Muir will take place in December. Bowls of huge poppies were much admired in the drawing-room, where competitions were engaged in and a dainty afternoon tea was served. Later Miss Audrey "Whitelaw and Miss June Wilson helped the bride-elect to open the many gifts, and thank those present. Competitions were won by Mrs. Emeny and Miss Mavis Emeny. Miss May Martin and Miss Edna .Lambert. Miss Wilson rendered some appreciated songs. Miss Whitelaw wore a dainty frock of pink floral georgette made with rucked yoke and bishop sleeves. Mrs. Philip Hilton was hostess ■at a very pleasant afternobn party given recently at her residence, Ariki Road, Hataitai, in honour Of Miss Christine j Riethmuller, whose marriage takes place shortly.
