WELLINGTON CLUB JUBILEE
The present week is an important one in the annals of the Wellington; Bowling Club,. for. on Thursday the club celebrates the fiftieth anniversary ;of the founding of its green. The;opening ceremony was- performed' by the Governor; Sir, William Francis Drum--mohd Jervois, G.C.M.G., C.8., on November 19, 1887, in' the presence of a large gathering.. . Several members »l Parliament were present.
Since its inauguration the club has gone forward, and although :it has passed through some vicissitudes, more especially in the recent years; of economic stringency, it has always been favoured with prudent and zealous officials, who have never failed to guide it safejy in times of stress. A; the present time the club has over two hundred members. During the.last two or three years there has been a large accession of members, including a good proportion of young or early middle-aged men, who have brought renewed life to the fine old club.
The golden jubilee programme is as follows:—November, 19, one-day open rink tournament, for which large entries have been received; November 20, veterans' day (centre fixture); November 21, Wellington v. combined clubs Given favourable weather during the three days' play, the Wellington ChiO will be the Mecca of many players and bowling enthusiasts. No fewer thaa 384 players will use the club's greens in the three days, that is, 128 bowlers all day on the 19th' and a similar number on the afternoons of the 20th and 21st respectively. The greens will, however, be found to be quite equal to the strain imposed upon them.
