CITY PROPERTY BOUGHT
For a great many years the site of the old horse trams depot in Adelaide Road has been vacant. It is now to carry a modern two-storey building, to occupy an area having three frontages, two of 144 ft and one of 123 ft. The property was owned by the Wellington City Corporation and has been purchased by Selfridges (N.Z.) Ltd., for the purpose of erecting thereon a bulk store suitable for the company's purposes and to deal with a large volume of this class of business.
The site provides excellent facilities with its three frontages and natural lighting obtainable.
It is understood that plans for the building are being prepared by Mr. Norman R. Lightbody, A.N.Z.I.A.
The value of the site is believed to be in the vicinity of £7000. The transaction for the sale of the property was negotiated through the agency of A. Leigh Hunt. The older residents of Wellington will well remember the site with its traffic of the old horse trams and their service along Adelaide Road between the city and Newtown. The horse trams did excellent service to the public in those days, but they had to give place to modern means of public conveyance in the form of the electric tramways.
