FIREMEN'S WAGES
PALMERSTON BRIGADE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., September 29. Increases in the rate of pay and an extra fortnight's leave for firemen were granted in an agreement reached today in conciliation proceedings between the Wellington • Fire Brigade Employees' Union and the Palmerstou North Fire Board. Considerable interest attaches to the settlement, because the terms are likely to be treated as the basis for disputes affecting fire brigades' conditions in provincial centres.
The wages fixed were: Probationer firemen, £3 5s a week; third-class firemen, £3 7s 6d; second-class firemen, £3 19s 6d; first-class firemen, £4 9s 6d; senior firemen,- £5 10s; firemenmechanics, £4 12s 6d. Married men not provided with living quarters are to be paid £1 extra and single men are to be paid 5s extra where there is no mess.
