BASIC WAGE
TAKING OF EVIDENCE
COURT TO SIT ON OCTOBER 19
It was announced today that the Court of Arbitration will be sitting in Wellington on October 19 at 10 a.m. and on subsequent days for the purpose of hearing evidence and submissions on behalf of the employers and employees to enable the Court to determine the basic rates of wages for male and female workers provided for in the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Act, 1936. The hearing is anticipated to take from seven to ten days, and it is to be followed by the ordinary Wellington sitting of the Court. Earlier this month it was reported that an advocate will appear for the workers and one for the employers, and that they will submit arguments and call evidence. It was also stated that the Court will be willing to hear all reasonable evidence produced. Inquiries made today indicated that the representation of the respective parties has not yet been finalised. It was learned, however, that among those who will be taking a prominent part in the proceedings, will be Mr. T. O Bishop, secretary of the New Zea land Employers' Federation, and Mr. J. Robinson, of Dunedin, secretary of the Otago Trades and Labour Council: Mr J. Roberts, secretary of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Federation, is also likely to appear on benak of workers in several organisations.
