IN SHALLOW WATER

LINER TAMAROA

"SMELLING THE BOTTOM"

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

Rumours were current in Lyttelton this morning that the liner Tamaroa had grounded near the entrance to the moles of the inner harbour. Neither the owners' representative, Captain A. J. Charman, nor the harbourmaster, Captain J. F. Crawford, would verify the report.

The incident is said to have occurred at approximately 7 o'clock and the vessel did not berth until 8 o'clock.

Captain Crawford said the delay was occasioned by the Tamaroa "smelling the bottom." In plain terms, it meant that the vessel was in shallow water and owing to the propellers setting up a strange motion the vessel had got into- a position in which it was difficult to manoeuvre her.
