CLUB OPENINGS

I A .number of. Wellington lawn ten* ! nis clubs officially opened their 1936----37 season in ideal weather on Saturday afternoon. Attendances indicated an enthusiastic interest in the new season. The Technical College Old Students* Tennis Club's season -was officially opened by the Director.of the Technical College, Mr. Ridling. Messrs. McDonnell and Richards represented the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs. T. Coombs and Lyon played an exiiibition match. : . ■ . The Karori Tennis Club opened its 3936-37 season in beautiful ■ weather. Mr. W. A. Fraser, the chairman, welcomed some 80 members. The season was declared open by the president, Mr. S. H. Burn. Among those present were Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.,.- who made a brief speech, and' Colonel G. T. Hall, vice-president, and Mr.'R'. McL. Ferkins, representing the management committee of the " Wellington' Lawn Tennis Association. Mr. G. A. Henderson, a foundation and a life member, was also present. . , The Victoria University College Tennis Club opened its11936-37. season with a very well-attended Yankee'tournament in which more than sixty players competed Among those present were Messrs: J. M. Pinkerton, of the'W.L.T.A. management committee, introduced by the president, Mr. S. Fernandez, officially opened the Wellesley Club season. An exhibition match was played between Messrs. Bedford and Roussell, Roussell winning 6-5. Mr. Binet Brown introduced tlie new' president of the Trinity .Club,- the Bey, Mr. Parker, who declared' the season open before on' attendance of some' 60 members. Mr. L. Pollock represented the W.L.T.A. management committee. The Hataitai, Roseneath, St. Peter's, and Victoria Clubs opened their official seasons on Saturday afternoon, with very good attendances in each case. Watson; - women's doubles, Misses W. Witcornbe and B. Lamberg; mixed doubles,! J. C. Souness and Mrs.H. V. Middlemiss.. Handicaps: Men's singles, J. Benjamin; , men's doubles, J. C. Souness and A. J. Craig; women's singles,-Mrs. H. W;-1" -Watson; women's • doubles, Mrs. W. ■ McGregor and Miss Y. Pearce; mixed doubles, C, Lamberg arid Mrs. Johnston. Mr. F. Histed performed the opening ceremony at the Broadway Club before approximately 60 members and visitors. Mr. J. L. Mac Duff (chairman) and Mr. P. R. Cooper represented tha W.L.T.A. management committee. The Rev. E. McLevie,club president, served the first ball at the Boseneath Club opening and presented, last season's trophies as follows:—Cham pionships: Men's singles, S. Palnter t women's singles, Miss J. Sellars; mixei doubles, K. Hawthorn and Miss 1> McGregor. Handicaps: Men's, singles, S. Painter; women's singles. Miss J, Sellars; mixed doubles. S. Painter and Mrs. W. Morgan. Mr. H. L.
