Edith, Dowager Countess Lytton, was born in 1841 and was a daughter of the Hon. E. E. Villiers.l Int-1864 she married the first Earl of Lytfton, who died in 1891, and they had two sons and three daughters. One of these sons is Earl Lytton,' chairman of the League of Nations Mission • to Manchuria. The Dowager Countess was formerly a Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria and to Queen Alexandra.

The Countess had been ill for some days following a fall which resulted in a fractured hip. .
