CIVIL ENGINEERS
SOCIAL AND DANCE There was a very friendly, intormal atmosphere about the social and dance held by the Wellington, branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers in the Mayfair Cabaret last night. Scottisches, military two-steps, and other good old-fashioned dances, with their rollicking, festive spirit, created a lot of fun, and saved the dance programme from the monotony which is Usual at dances when there is only a succession of modern fox trots* onesteps; etc., all of which the great majority are unfortunately inclined to perform with'one action—a conversational, aimless amble around the room. Items were also a pleasant feature of. the entertainment. Songs were given by Mrs. E/ T. Spidy (who was accompanied by her daughter, Miss Irene Spidy) and Miss N. Frame, and Miss V. Tait recited. The decorations were bright and attractive, Iceland poppies being arranged on'all the tables both in the ballroom-and the supper room. The chairman of the branch (Mr. G. G; Callender) and his wife were the host and hostess for the.evening. Mrs. Callender was dressed in a frock of Chinese crepe in thctiew shade named "thriller red" with a short black cape. The dance - cdrninittee "included Messrs.: W. E. PuddyVdioh: secretary)* H. F. Toogood, F;;M. Hansen, K. E. Luke, H. W. Falkher, W. L. Newnhanv E. M. Sladden, and G. P. Anderson. ■:
