CELLULOSE POPULAR
The widespread increase in the use! of cellulose in industry has created a heavy demand for this product, the ] purest form of which is cotton, but which also can be produced from wood and various. plant stems and stalks. One of the most recently developed processes which is coming into general use for the production of cellulose uses as its, source of raw material wheat straw, a substance which isnow almost a total loss to the farmer. It is a continuous, almost automatic process, requiring little labour. It requires plenty of water and electrical power. About half the weight of the I straw is converted into cellulose. Three of these plants are now in operation, two in South America and one in Italy. A paper mill is run in connection with i the latter. .: I
