CASES OF CRUELTY

"BOBBY" CALF TRADE (Special to the "Evenlna Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. As a result of the activities of the Manawatu branch of the S.P.C.A., there has been considerable improvement in the handling'of the "bobby" calf business in the district. As a matter of fact, because of the good work it has done, the branch has received a donation from the proprietors of a freezing company handling many calves during the course of a season. Members, nevertheless, were rather horrified this week to learn from the inspector of some of the cruelties that had come within his notice, mostly the work of irresponsible youths, it was [contended. The inspector stated that Ihe had accompanied a lorry into the Opiki district, ywhere some calves had been found very wet and muddy and tied up with wire which had been twisted around the legs like a hobble. These calves had been refused by the lorry driver. The owner had promised that such a thing would not happen again. There had been another case in a different locality where two calves had been tied up at the gate at-11 a.m. arid left there all night in the wet and cold, to be discovered dead next morning. Many farmers were acting in the proper manner towards the calves, but others would sell anything, even calves born but a few hours, for the price of 8s each now being offered. The lorry drivers received Is per head for cartage, and it mattered little to them whether the calves died or not on the journey. '
