FLOWERS AT MOERA

SHOW FOR KINDERGARTEN The Lower Hutt Free Kindergarten Association's spring show was opened in the Moera Hall last evening by the Hon P. Fraser, Minister of Education, who was-accompanied by Mrs. Fraser. Among the official party were Mrs W. Nash,- the' Mayor of ■ Lower Hutt (Mr. J. "W. Andrews) and Mrs. Andrews, Miss Adams (principal of the kindergarten), Mrs. H. E. Leighton, and Mr G Sutherland, vice-chairman of the- Kindergarten Association. ■ -In front of the stage was a. fine display of blossom by the, reserves 'department of the Lower Hutt Borough Council. The cut flowers and decorative sections included some tine blooms. Good entries were received in the cooking section. A display,was made by Mr.: E.- Odium. , ■ . . :•-„ ■ The judges were:—Narcissi, Mr,,- H. Poole, sen.; cut flowers and decorative, ■Mr. E.•'Hutt: cooking and preserves, Mrs. T. C. Bilby; sewing and homecraft, Miss Alcorn. . At the opening ceremony Mrs. Sutherland said the show was held to raise funds to carry on the work of the kindergarten. The flowers should show the people of the Hutt Valley what. Moera could grow, and it was encouraging for the Moera exhibitors to know that the judges considered the blooms in the Moera section to be better-than those in the open section. There was' a fairly large kindergarten ■in"' Moera,' with three"-teachers; The kindergarten was getting more . assistance from the, Government now than it had /-received; in,the past, and he hoped that the people of the district'would give the kindergarten their moral arid financial support. . , . Mr; Andrews welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Fraser. The Hon. P. Fraser apologised for the absence of the Hon. W. Nash, who was, he said, possibly the busiest man in New Zealand. As Minister of Edu- 1 cation he was pleased- to see this wonderful effort on behalf of the Moera kindergarten. He congratulated the principal and teachers of the-kinder-garten and wished them every 'sucHe used to count among his close friends the late Miss Riley, founder of the kindergarten.
