CORRESPONDENCE

SUNDAY BAND CONCERTS

(To tlie Editor.) Sir,—As a citizen of Lower Hutt I wish to enter a strong protest against the action of the Lower Hutt Borough Council in refusing a permit to the Municipal Band, to hold a Sunday night concert in aid of the band funds. This band is worthy of every praise for the way in which it comes to the assistance of any organisation which requires its services. It is a municipal band in the true sense of the word, as practically every member is a citizen of the district, and I think the majority of them are ratepayers. It would be wise for the councillors to take note of the popularity of the band as evidenced by the large house it secured at its first concert. One councillor, I understand by your report, referred to "undesirable features" of the last concert. Now, Sir, I was present that evening, and I have no hesitation in saying that it was one of the best regulated concerts I have ever enjoyed. I understand that when another band had an; application before the council for a Sunday night's concert, the matter of the payment of wages was not introduced. Again, to go a little further back, when a concert was being held to help raise benefit funds, these councillors raised no objection. When councillors come before the electors again soliciting their votes they will be asked some pertinent questions regarding their treatment of this popular band.—l am, etc., \. H; H; MILNE. . ■■ Lower Hutt. ';;v\;'.:-.■■, September 18.
