ASHBURTON RACES

WIN-AND-PLACE BETTING (Special t o' the “Evening Post.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Ashburton County Racing Club will open the .southern spring circuit, tomorrow. The course should be in good order, and thpre is material for some keen racing. As usual, a number of throe-year-olds will provide interest, and the John Grigg Stakes will give the southern two-year-olds their first chance of a race. Betting will be on the win-and-place system. The following horses may be fancied: — County Hurdles.—Redolent and Wexford Bridge, Novice Stakes.—Aggravate, Trench Fight, and Autumn Wind. Selma Trot.—Fine Art, Zincali, and Rcymere. Ashburton Handicap. —Tout le Monde and The Surgeon. John Grigg Stakes.—Card Player, Screamer, and Guinea Fowl. Penscroft Plandicap.—Cape Gabo, Fiord, and Sir Hugh. Spring Handicap.—Great Star, Grey Honour, and Wino. Rakaia Trot.—Renown’s Best, King’s Drive, and Lottie Guy. The card is:— 12.20 * COUNTY HURDLE HANDICAP. £100: 1% miles and 100 yards.

TURF NEWS IN BRIEF Nominations ,for the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Meeting are due on Mon-. day evening. Although Redolent arid Vitaphone, both from S. Barr's stable, are acceptors for the hurdle race at Ashburton, it is possible that only one of them will be started. Although Siegmund has been disappointing so far, this big son of Siegfried may surprise one day oyer a middle" distance on a roomy track, Gallio may not have furnished as much as he might have done during the winter, so it is possible he will be late in coming to hand this season. His next racing will afford the clue. Dungarvan is to have a further trial over 1£ miles at Foxton tomorrow. It will be remembered he pulled up distressed in such a race in July, but last autumn he won the Pahiatua Cup.

Crown Acre, who will be making her debut at Foxton tomorrow, is a seven-year-old mare by Acre from the Wolowa mare Canyon, and she is owned by Mr. P. Power, of Otaki. Cavity, an early offspring of Canyon, was a very mean individual.

Golden Sheen, a new name among the maiden acceptors for Foxton, is a five-year-old chestnut mare by Thomond from an Unnamed mare by Sir Frisco. She is owned in Foxton by Mr. W. Dorreen. - J. Olsen has returned Hunting Jay to his owner. It is a pity this good galloper has such bad manners, as he is capable of winning over fences. Hest, whose form has been consistently disappointing, though . she has been doing great track work, is to be retired to the stud and will be mated with The Curragh Stud stallion Leighon. ' Gold Nymph, an acceptor for the maiden event at Foxton tomorrow, is a five-year-old chestnut mare by Lackham from the Gold Reef mare Gold Necklace, a half-sister to Seaspxrte, the dam of Seatown, etc. She whl carry the colours of Mrs. K. McDonald, of Levin. Pickmeup, a newcomer in the maiden field at Foxton tomorrow, is a three-year-old gelding by Peach Brandy from the Rangitero—Plutus mare Dark Queen, and he is being raced on lease from Mrs. M. D. Carter by the Awapuni trainer G. W. New. Fair Weather, a useful sprinter under winter conditions and the winner of £689 10s in stakes last season, will be spelled until the beginning of next year. Fair Weather races best when the tracks are on the soft side, and it is not likely that many tracks would suit him before the autumn. D. Munro no doubt was hopeful that The Marne would give him his first winning ride in the Epsom Handicap, but his suspension at last weeks Tattersall's Meeting has dealt a deathblow to that prospect. The Epsom is one of the few-big handicaps that have eluded him.

RED RUFUS AS HURDLER . (Special to tho “Eveninfl Post.”) HASTINGS, This Day. Rod Rufus, Stroller, First Chapter, and Royal Bengal leave here today for Foxton.

Red Rufus is'fighting fit in condition but lacks confidence at his fences. Condition and pace on the flat, however, may stand him in the hurdles. Stroller is an even better horse than whan winning his recent double at New Plymouth. He carries the district's full confidence.

First Chapter has been galloping most attractively, and against the same opposition here would be at a short price. He is considered by many a hall-mark proposition. Royal Bengal is a dyed-in-the-wool "iffer," and though he might win local investors would not profit a penny.

CALLAMOST ON IMPROVE (Special from "Limited.") HAWERA, September 17. T.'Fryer left for Foxton today with Callamost and Kia Ora. Callamost has improved with his racing and galloped a smart three furlongs for a hunter. B. Kowhai is to ride Callamost and S. Anderson (if available) will ride Kia Ora.

Panloff is also to go down to the meeting. He is working well and R. Webby is to ride him. Mr. Frank Walker intends giving his Siegfried—Rapt colt Fafner a run at Marton and he is shaping well in work.

Encouraged by his success at Wanganui, the Messrs. R., T. A., and W. Smith, owners of Wotan, made a hurried change of plans, and he is being sent over to join J. Fryer's team at Warwick Farm. He left Havvera by float for Marton- this morning, from where he will be entrained for Auckland. Accompanied by his owners, he sails on the Awatca tomorrow. He was not nominated for the A.J.C. Meeting, so will be reserved for Victorian racing. He is engaged in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

ENGLISH OWNERS RETIRE A short time back Lord Lonsdale announced his intention of selling his horses in training, as an economy measure, necause ne was seriously affected by the mining depression in' West Cumberland, and now word comes from England that Lord Howard de Walden has also decided to curtail his racing interests.

The following statement was issued last month 6n behalf of Lord Howard de Walden:—"Owing to the heavy burden of taxation, Lord Howard de Walden finds that it is necessary l ' to make drastic cuts in his expenditure, and is, therefore, reducing his racing and stud commitments. He is making arrangements to sell all his horses in training, and most of his mares, yearlings, and foals. He will probably reserve some of his yearling fillies for future stud purposes." Lord Howard de Walderi has never been an enthusiastic owner, and his appearances at race meetings have been infrequent. He is one of the few who have resigned from the Jockey Club. This he did in 1924 after nineteen years' membership. The best horse he ever owned was Zinfandel, trained for I him by the late Major Charles Beatty, and who, after a desperately unlucky defeat by Throwaway in the Ascot Gold Cup in 1904, won the trophy in the following season.
