AVONDALE MEETING

EVEN CUP ISSUE FIRST JUVENILE CLASSIC (Special from “Early Bird.”) ; AUCKLAND, This Day. One would have to go back very many years to find a field of twenty for tiie Avondale Cup, and this in itself suggests that there will be almost a surfeit of handicap horses for the spring meetings. ' This is very encouraging, ana with plenty of entries for the nack contests the season in the north promises to be very successful. All round the fields at the opening tomorrow of the Avondale Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting are excellent, and this roomy track should provide thrilling racing. Betting will be on the old 75-25 per cent, system. The course should oe in fine order. ft is probable that the three good horses at the head of the Avondale Cup candidates, Jonathan, Master Bnerly, and Bed Manfred, may not be sufficiently forward, but the first-men-tioned comes .to hand quickly for a big gelding,. and he may make the most forward showing of this trio. Velocipede is useful and under his comparatively light impost and on a prospective dry track he should make a bold showing; Scotland won over this distance at the last Avondale meeting, and he is a fit horse after his winter racing. Tybalt has yet ,to win beyond a mile, although his. second in the last Mitchelson Cup left" no doubt that he will do so some day. Mazir will not lack' friends.. Tradesman is a fit horse and rain on the day will see him difficult to head off, especially as he outstayed the Jellicoe Handicap Held'last month. Lord Val is lit, ana Lagoon-ought to improve on her last showing. Horowhenua and Knight ol Australia have condition in their favour, but they have disappointed rather often. Silver" Brier and Con Fuoco are two possibilities, the former having won at her last two starts, and Con Fuoco, patiently-ridden tomorrow, is likely to be particularly well suited by the long straight; King Musk never looked better and may surprise. • ■ The Flying Handicap s is another problem so early; in the season, with three of last season’s two-year-olds m Gallic, Golden Sheila, and Golden Blonde likely to hold their end up well against the cracks of the older division, the best ot these appearing to be Royal Dance, Prince Acre, and Puss Moth. , . , The Avondale Stakes promises to attract about eighteen runners, and then it will be a gamble, for the ha fmile start is situated half a furlong after the big top. bend commences, ana the horses are on the turn tor nearly two furlongs before they come to the long straight Horses seasoned by the race at Wanganui are Sigurd, Aiwai, and Girl Pat, and their experience should stand them in good stead tomorrow. RIDERS IN AVONDALE CUP

(Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, This Day, In the Champion Hack Plate on the opening day at Avondale the two maidens Singara and Rollicker, both owned by Mr. K.T. Reid, will be bracketed. The former is a half-brother by Whirlwind to Barnbury, Whirling, and Queen's Counsel, and Rollicker is a half-brother by Hunting Song to High Comedy, Star Artist, and Light Comedy. Coupled horses in the Avondale Stakes will be Bowyang and Harlech, Elanage and Love Parade, and The Crooner and Bluffer. Most of the owners with horses in the two principal handicap events on Saturday have finalised their riders, and these are as follows: —
