Railway Department's application for a renewal of the Wellington-Hutt Park service was called, Mr. Bishop, representing the Eastbourne Borough Council, asked that a stand be provided in. Wellington for the Railway Department arid the Eastbourne buses on Hutt Park race' days. The present position, in which the Eastbourne bus stand was lower down the street, operated unfairly against the Eastbourne buses. He thought that the Eastbourne buses were entitled to some of the perhaps one in four. On the authority's suggestion .representatives of the Railway Department and the Eastbourne Borough Council bus service will confer in an endeavour to arrive at an amicable arrangement for dealing with the traffic on Hutt Park race days. tITAHI-WEtMNGTON SERVICE.

Dealing with the application of J. A. Hunter for a renewal of his licence for the Titahi-Wellington; service, Mr. U. P. Calcinai, Transport Department vehicle inspector, said he could not give a certificate of fitness"'for the three buses used by the applicant. "I don't cbnsider they are safe and suitable," he said. He also stated that Mr. Hunter had given him a verbal assurance that he would have them- attended to, and that he was alsO getting a new bus.

They compared unfavourably with other services operating in the Wellington district. Knight, 'who appeared for the applicant,-'asked for permission, to increase: the passenger-carrying allowance on from Feilding to Wellington from six passengers to eight. The new car specially constructed for the service was, he said, able-to take eight passengers. '

Objection was raised by Mr. W. Schierning, district traffic manager in the Railway Department. "The way we look at it," he said, "is that this service is primarily for carrying newspapers from Wellington, and the newspaper company should pay for it. ', By agreeing to an' increase in passengercarrying we are in effect subsidising this service for the newspaper." The Authority: ■ The feeling I have is that if it had been necessary to enlarge the vehicle for the carriage of passengers there might have been something to be said for the application. But operators of licences must riot buy new cars with the idea that they are going to get an extension merely because they have bought new cars. They should find out first whether they will get the licence; We are not going to increase carrying capacity automatically merely because the operator' has bought; a larger vehicle. The.licence is granted on this occasion, but in future the applicant must find, out .whether the increase will be granted. : ' . Mr. •Knight- also asked for exemption from the Act for a relief driver for two Saturdays in the year while the permanent-driver was on holidays. The chairman pointed out that" the regulations . were framed for the safety, of the public, and the board would not, therefore, lightly grant exemptions. .
