PRISONERS SENTENCED

Two years' reformative detention was the sentence imposed by Mr. Justice Smith in the Supreme Court today on John Valentine Proctor, aged 30, a labourer and showman, for assault with intent to rob, in the Gisborne district. His Honour regarded him as the ringleader in the offence, with which Frank Fitzwilliams, aged 45, a labourer, was also charged. Both had previous convictions, the latter having the more, and in sentencing him to one year's imprisonment with hard labour the Judge warned him of the possibility of being declared a J^abitual criminal. Mr. M. G. Neal appeared for Fitzwilliams.

The same warning was given to John Tahu Anaru, aged 26, a farm labourer, who had pleaded guilty at Napier to a charge of breaking, entering, and theft. He also had a number of previous convictions, and his Honour sentenced him to reformative detention for a period not exceeding two years.

William Joseph Gee, aged 30, a cook, was sentenced to four years' and two years' imprisonment with hard labour, to be served concurrently, on charges of breaking, entering, and theft, breaking and entering with intent,to commit a crime, and theft from a Swelling at Wellington. He also had a number of previous convictions. Mr. A. E. Hurley appeared for him.

For forging and uttering at Auckland, Lionel John Lynch, aged ,21, a clerk, who also had previous convictions, was sentenced to two and a halt years' reformative detention, to run concurrently with a sentnece he is at present serving. In all cases the Acting Crown Prosecutor (Mr. C. Evans-Scott) appeared for the Crown.
