STATION UNSUITABLE

UPPER HUTT FIRE BRIGADE

The opinion that the Upper Hutt fire station buildings were unsuitable ■for the valuable equipment housed there was expressed by the inspector (Mr. C. E. H. Yarnell) in a special report to the meeting of the Upper Hutt- Borough Council last evening. After detailing the various defects of the present building, Mr. Yarnell stated that the risk of fire was greater today than previously owing to the fact that motors with benzine and oil were under the same roof. He was of the opinion that consideration should be given to the erection of a new building of modern design.

Councillors expressed various opinions on whether the present station should be repaired with concrete work or whether a new fire station should be erected. The Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy) ■■ stated that the council had promised the Silverstream brigade a new. station. There was not enough money this year for both buildings. The site of the. present .fire station at Upper, Hutt would be wanted for extensions of the borough offices. If the fire station were erected in Station Street the engine Would be able to get away promptly to all parts of the borough. Councillor J. Blewman expressed the opinion that the fire station should be re-erected in a more central position in the east ward.

Councillor A; Howell said that the Upper Hutt fire station was in more urgent need of repair .than the Silver-stream-fire station. ,

It . was finally decided to refer the matter ■ to. the fire prevention committee for a full report.
