RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED
Guide Frank Alack, chief guide et the Fox Glacier for the past five years, has announced his retirement. He leaves Vveheka on July 25, and expects to go overseas, states the "Wcstport Times."
Guide Alack is one of the bestknown and most popular guides in the Dominion. Frotr: Vne time he commenced at the Hermitage in 1925, up to the present time, he has earned the reputation of being safe and with a tremendous amount, of knowledge. He was directly responsible for the erection of the Pioneer Bivouac, 8000 feet up the Fox Glacier, and the highest building in the Dominion. Many people have known it as a cosy, warm haven after a strenuous climb, but it was entirely through Guide Alack's enthusiasm and energy that it was built. During the last two winters, Guide Alack has been popularising winter climbing on skis, his activities in this direction often ' bringing him before the public.
