PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

The pupils .of Scots College opened the fifteenth annual public speaking contest before a large attendance of parents and friends in. the college gymnasium last night. The contest wasvthe best held for some years past and the judges had no enviable task in .selecting the winners. The senior section was,won by G. K. C. Campbell (Schwitzer), with R. A. Scott (Rudyard Kipling) and M. Miles (Count Felix vori LucknerJ placed second equal, while the junior section was won by R. Blanchard (Rev. John Flynn), with R. Macarthur (Captain Scott) and R. D. Richmond (Robert E. Lee) second equal. Mr. J. R. Sutcliffe said that the twelve finalists had been chosen from a field of thirty-six entrants, adding that the standard in the junior section was particularly high. He discussed, the important position public speaking would hold in the future . and expressed the hope that parents would encourage their sons to enter for future contests. Mr. I. Macarthur, president of the Old Boys' Association, then : took the chair and briefly outlined the condi-! tions of the contest, saying that the junior prize was presented by Mrs. Sutcliffe, and the senior by the Old Boys' Association. A number of songs were sung during the absence of the judges, Messrs. A. Eaton Hurley and W. W. Virtue, to consider the placings. The following is a list of the speakers and their subjects:— < Junior: R. Macarthur (Captain Scott), R. Blanchard (Rev. John Flynn), T. Sewell (O. T. J. Alpers). V. Chapman (Lister), R. D. Richmond (Robert E. Lee),- and C. Wishart (Robert Clive). Senior: M. Ashbolt (Marie Antoinette), P. Johnstone (William * Ad™o, R. A. Scott (Rudyard Kipling), G. K. C. Campbell (Schwifaer). D. C.
