HATCH'S FIRST WINNER

The former Awapuni trainer H. E. Hatch, who went across to Australia in charge of Mr. J. J. Corry's horses early last spring and has since remained in Victoria, led in his first winner at the recent V.R.C. Birthday.Meeting. Hatch's initial Victorian success was with Fire King, a two-year-old black colt by Rosewmg (a son of Sunstar) from the imported Chaucer mare Sweet Pea. Fire King was originally owned by Mr. Darcy Eccles, but was acquired by his ' present : owner, Mr. Vernon Winn, during the autumn. He showed promising form a week previous at Moonee Valley, when-he ran-third, and as a consequence-he, was second favourite when he won at Flemington. His success was in the Princess Handicap, for two-year-old colts and geldings, of £500, and run over seven furlongs. A feature of his performance was that after being among the leaders throughout he was able to come away at the end.

Not only was Hatch enjoying his first Australian win, but Fire King's jockey, H. Olsen, was breaking a losing sequence of nearly 100 rides. K. Voitre, who served his apprenticeship with Hatch, and who did such excellent service for the stable for some years after the expiry of his apprenticeship, rode Setting Sun in the- same race, going to scale at 7.10, 31b overweight, but his mount ran unplaced. •
