PLUNGE ON ONE WHETU
One of the most remarkable early spring plunges in recent years indicates- definitely that the mission in Australia of the New Zealand stayer One Whetu will be the Caulfield Cup (says an Australian writer). A com-' mission, reminiscent of thirty years ago, when owners and trainers supported their horses for tens of thousands of pounds immediately spring weights were declared, began a fortnight ago, and was continued last week. Operations involved sums of £1000 in doubles with Gold Rod and other favoured Melbourne Cup horses, and bookmakers have One Whetu one of the equal favourites. The explanation of the decision to tackle the Caulfield Cup is obvious. 9 n T e^ Whetu was handicapped by the A.J.C. handicapper, Mr. G. F. Wilson, at 8.9 in the Metropolitan, and although the Australian handicappers generally agree very closely in their spring adjustments, Mr. Sam Griffiths let the horse in at 7.8 at Caulfield. Apparently he overlooked the good staying record that One Whetu has built up in New Zealand during the present season, and if the horse should progress the right- way Melbourne bookmakers may be in some trouble to cover their liabilities when the Caulfield Cup is run early in October.
