JUMPER LATER ON

COROWA'S LIKELY FUTURE

(Special from "Limited.") HAWERA, July 14. Corowa was the only Hawera horse to finish in the money at Trentham, running' a first, second, and third, and collecting £200 in stakes. His ownertrainer, Mr. B. la Pouple, had complete satisfaction in his horse's success,.] as he bred the horse himself and has always had faith in him when his mediocre track efforts would have discouraged a less sanguine owner. Corowa's breeding will stand close investigation, as he is full of the Musket strain, his • fourth dam, Brown Alice, being by Nordenfeldt from the Yattendon mare Ouida. Rising five years he may yet achieve his owner's ambition of winning a Grand National or a big hurdle race. He is to be kept at easy exercise to prevent becoming gross and probably he will have his next outing at the Wanganui Spring Meeting. Mr. la Pouple is concentrating on a rising three-year-old full-brother to Corowa who also shows plenty of substance and more quality than his relative did at a similar age, and also a yearling by Lord Quex from Lady Gen who, though small, is a very shapely youngster. " ' FRYER OUT OF LUCK. J. Fryer had no luck with his team at Trentham, and it was indeed unfortunate that-he could not run Cynical Kid, who went very sore after working in the heavy going. Hawera horses nominated for the Manawatu Meeting are Oriel, Panloff, Indiscretion, and Glenthawn, who are due to have an outing on the Wednesday, previous at. Marton,-and One Whetu, .Wotan, and Le Grand. ■.. : During Fryer's absence at Trentham One Whetu, Oriel, and Indiscretion did road exercised Yesterday morning they were given half-pace work. One Whetu looks in splendid order, and a decision as to his trip to Australia will soon be arrived at. Panloff has completed his qualifying for hunt events, and Oriel and Indiscretion have one more run yet to make. Just Off made his reappearance on the Hawera tracks this morning, but on pulling up after his work showed signs of soreness. - W. Grindlay has schooled Mint Tour and Briorni over the hurdles. The former is a qualified hunter and jumps capably. Briorni shaped satisfactorily for a novice. Sceptic, who -is also qualified end is being prepared ' for New Plymouth, gave a good exhibition over faree' hurdles, but jumped big. FILLY FOR SPRING. The Gay Lothario filly Gay Step in O. Cox's stable has done well, since coming to Hawera, and gives the impression that she will be; ready for early spring racing. The rising two-year-olds Ruling Star and;Lickem in the same stable are making good progress. Cox has an addition to his string in a big upstanding gelding, .rising five, by Cape Horn from a Kilbroney mare. Friesland and Valroy are still on the easy list. H. Mills has started seriously- with the Lackham—Airway filly Gold Band, who, through: shin troubles, was not raced this season. Gold Band has done well., and, although, bearing the marks of her trouble, she is not expected to experience further setbacks.

-Kia Ora had her first fast work since resuming track exercise on Saturday morning when, after commencing slowly, she sprinted three furlongs in 39sec.

J. Brown's quartet of rising three-year-olds—Notium, Shemseh, Kia Tere, and Student Princ&-rare all in great order. They, are still.doing road and track exercise alternately. Shemseh isJ booked to have her first run at the Rangitikei Meeting next week. Notium is very eager in his work and looks as if he will be ready any time required. Kia Tere and Student Prince are.making good progress. Attending the tracks regularly and attracting attention is Settlement, the Night Raid—Receipt colt. - This fullrelative to Blixten shows a lot of quality but is not as forward as some of the other yearlings.l; •-■ '. ':.. Bright Glow's daughter, Mystic Glow arid Ned Cuttle, two rising three-year-olds in J. Fryer's stable, are both shaping up and are likely to race early. Mr. F. Walker's rising two-year-old by Siegfried—Rapt is coming to hand rapidly and moves well. He is to race as '-Fattier. '.''■.■'
