COURTESY OF THE ROAD

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —May 1 use your columns to protest against the lack of forethought and consideration for fellow motorists shown by so many of the young people on the roads today.

I witnessed an incident on Sunday evening that provided an example of the type of conduct of which I complain. On my return journey to Wellington I saw a stationary car by the roadside with the passengers grouped around it and two people lying on the road near the car. Naturally I thought an accident had occurred and stopped to inquire if I could be of assistance. I was told, however, that the trouble was merely a puncture, and the two "bodies" were lying on the road under a rug in search of warmth. Almost certainly, before and after :my advent, other motorists were similarly deceived by this scene which seemed to indicate tragedy. My inquiries seemed to provide considerable amusement for the couple under the rug, and they seemed to think nothing of stopping would-be helpful drivers.—l am, etc.,

COURTESY.
