RADIO FACILITIES

USE BY POWER BOARD

PERMISSION GRANTED

Repair work carried out by the, Auckland Electric Power Board will be greatly facilitated shortly by the use of two-way radio communication for which official permission has been given. The proviso that the wavelength, fixed at 182.9 metres, may be reserved for similar public utility services raises the question of the extension of such radio communication, particularly in relation to ambulance work.

At a meeting of the board the general manager reported that the Post : master-General, following a recent interview, had favourably considered representations made by the board regarding two-way radio communication betw.ccn service trucks and the central station.

"1 propose to follow this matter up without delay and obtain the necessary licence," said the manager. "I also intend to bring before the board as soon as possible full details of the equipment and an estimate of the cost. The board would be able to obtain a licence allowing for the operation o£ a private radio station and two trucks equipped with receiving and transmitting sets." While the same wavelength could be used by other power boards who intended to use radio there was little danger of interference or congestion.

The. chairman (Mr. W. J. Holdsworth) said the use of radio in this fashion would be a tremendous boon to the outer reticulated area. Radio would be of the greatest advantage during storm periods, and faults would be rectified with greater speed. It was good to know that the board was now going to be allowed to use up-to-date equipment.
