FINANCIAL HELP

KINDERGARTEN WORK

A' DUNEDIN REQUEST

(By Telegraph.-Press Association!)

DUNEDIN, July 13.

A request for financial assistance in carrying on the work of the Dunedin Free Kindergarten Association was made by a deputation from the association, comprising Lady Sidey, Mrs R A.- Ewing, and Mrs. D. Phillips, which waited on the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) this afternoon. Mrs. Ewing said that the Dunedin association, which was the. oldest in New Zealand, conducted five kindergartens, one in North-East Valley having been closed during .the depression Some years ago the association had received a grant of £400 from the Dunedin Savings Bank,, and had been virtually promised a subsidy on that amount by the Minister at that time The association had gone ahead and paid £450 for a section at St. Kilda but the subsidy had not come from the Government. Now the Savings Bank was willing to allow the association the section provided it received as much as it paid for the land, and it was possible that the money might be used for a kindergarten in some other district, possibly Tainui. The association was anxious ttTat the former Government capitation grant be restored.

The Minister promised to give consideration to the deputation's request as soon as possible. He. said it must be regarded as part of the general scheme of kindergartens in New Zealand, and the important thing was they should be efficiently conducted.-
