GALLIO'S PROGRESS

REREATU IN GOOD ORDER

(Special from "Early Bira.")

AUCKLAND, July 13.

Those who have seen Gallic lately state that the colt has Surnished into a magnificent: individual : and. that he should be better than ever next season. He has commenced sprinting at Te Awamutu and will*be very forward jf he takes on the open sprint at the Pakuranga fixture in six'weeks' time.

The putting back of the Martoo Meeting from September 5 to September 26 may be costly to the club, for il is doubtful if -any Auckland horses will now make the trip. Previously s few horses en': route to Wanganui foi the Guineas and other events competed there, but present. appearances indicate that owners desiring to get theii charges ready early will now. race ai the Pakuranga Meeting and then go or. to Wanganui, returning for Avondale, Rereatu, despite: his- failures at the last meeting at Ellerslie, still has c good claim to be the best sprinter in the district, for he has .won under bi| weights, his last winning effort being at Avondale three months ago, when he carried 9.11, the real merit in-the performance lying in the fact that tlic race. was run in a remarkable. storm of wind, hail, and' lightning. ! Rereatv failed to do' 'as well as expected lasl month, but he is still in good order and may have to be reckoned with at the Pakuranga fixture, for he is working well. His outings nowadays, suggest that he may be asked to run over a; middle distance next season. LORD WARDEN JUVENILE. A youngster that may be very forward for the Avondale Stakes, the first two-year-old classic in the north, is Privy Seal, by Lord Warden from Palestrina, in .W. Stone's stables at Te Awamutu. This training centre is generally in excellent order, and is in favour of preparing youngsters during the winter months. ■ W. Stone has been very successful in supplying .early two-year-old ■ winners, his ventures in this connection with Supremacy. Royal Ruler, arid Stretto being fresh in memory. Doubtless. Privy Seal is intended for the same early programme A horse <who has recently; returned to the active lists is Gar Vaals, whe has made his appearance at Ellerslie. j In his few races to date this halfbrother by Vaals to Sabatini has revealed a lot of pace, but has been entirely devoid of stamina. Perhaps with another year on to his age,- he is now rising four, he may become more solid, so it may be possible to place him. to advantage round the provincial 'circuit later in the season. However, with an all-round increase of stakes at what were formerly minor meetings the class of Worse engaged is certain to be much stronger, and that will not assist the moderates. : Rulette was a very promising two-year-old this season, the filly being very solid in some of her races, so that it Ipoks as if she will run' on next season. This sister to Supremacy is engaged in next season's classics, but as Galliois also in the same stable it is more than likely that Rulette will be confined to handicap racing—that is.' unless she has made very pronounced progress, in which case she may be. a useful second string, to her stable companion. ■ ~ '~:■■■ ' J UNITED ENCOURAGES. . At one stage United looked a rather hopeless proposition from a racing point of view, but his last showing was surprisingly good arid encouraging; He fell-in his. .first.,,puting :at- tlie .Great Northern Meeting,-• the hack hurdles' and on the middle day he was last, but I he completed his task. On the third day he carried Half a stoiie overweight and finished a fair third, having some useful hack hurdlers behind him, so that a repetition of'that run will see him a hard horse to beat among the hack hurdlers at the Pakuranga fixture. He is now rising eight years' of age and is a half-brother by Acre to Lady Zinnia. . , Prior to the Great Northern Meeting: it ,was said that Knight of Austfalia was to be tried out as a hurdler, arid so he will probably make his appearance in. this capacity-at the fixture at Paeroa early in October, that is, if,.his owner considers the obstacles at Avondale too formidable ■ for a novice. The Windbag geldips; is in excellent fettle at Ellerslie, ar* he may be given a last chance on the fiat at the Pakuranga fixture next month. He revealed all -his pace at the Greaf Northern Meeting, and if the opposition is weak next month his chances would have to be considered. ' ; : It is estimated that just .on fifty rising two-year-olds are in work at Auckland provincial • training centres, and as this is approximately 20 per cent, of the total number of youngsters registered to date it is obvious- that the future of racing in' the north is still very bright from the point of view of the number of horses available for racing. The early classics at Avondale and Ellerslie will be contested by plenty of two-year-olds, although in the case of the.latter fixture if Avondale racing produces another Stretto the field may be materially reduced.
