SOUTHERLY WINDS AT FIRST

Special-forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong1 southerly winds, but decreasing tonight and turning to the north-west tomorrow. Weather fine. The general forecast for the Do-! minion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate to strong southwesterly to southerly winds, gale force being reached at first in exposed positions on the East Coast, but winds will decrease in force later. There will be passing showers to the north of Kawhia but otherwise the weather will be fair to fine, although with scattered showers later in Westland and the far south. Temperatures will be cool.

Barometric pressure has remained above normal, and is now rising with the advance of an intense anti-cyclone across the northern Tasman Sea. Slight depressions passed in the south on Saturday and Sunday nights and accounted for scattered rains in.western and far southern districts. The weather, however, was fine and pleasant for the most part over the weekend, winds being light and variable. Since last night a fresh southerly has extended over most of the Dominion and temperatures have become colder. Except in the far north where showers were reported, the- weather this morning was still fair in most parts' of the country. . /

Auckland had fine' weather on Saturday with very little wind. It clouded over dur.ing the night, however, and some rain fell early on Sunday morning. But the sun shone for most of the day, the wind being a light southwesterly. Light rain totalling three points fell again last night, the weather this morning being fair with a moderate wind from the south-west.

Wellington had a fine and pleasant weekend with a very light northerly wind. Conditions yesterday were mild and spring-like. Bright sunshine on Saturday totalled 7.3 hours and on Sunday 5.4 hours.- The northerly freshened somewhat last night, but it was. calm between 2.45 a.m. and 5.15 a.m. today, after which a rather cold southerly sprang up.

Christchurch also had a fine weekend. A. cool easterly wind prevailed on Saturday, while yesterday it was practically calm. There was a frost of eleven degrees on Saturday night, and one of nine degrees last night. The weather this morning was clear with a northerly breeze.

It was calm and fine in Dunedin on Saturday, although cloudy at times. Sunday was also fine, but a strong south-westerly wind brought light rain, totalling two points, last night. The weather was clear this morning, but a south-westerly gale was blowing at 9 a.m.
