WELLINGTON'S DEFEAT
A FAST, OPEN GAME
(Hy Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND. This Day.
In a fast, open game Auckland re taincd the New Zealand hockey chal lenge shield, beating Wellington by 4 goals to 2. Wellington were slightly superior in some parts of the first half, at one lime leading, but after Auckland equalised the visitors lost their composure and Auckland attacked almost continuously. One of the most prominent Wellington players was the goalkeeper, Moore, who saved several certain goals, and who during part of the first half had to bear much of the attack.
Although the Auckland forward line was solid, it was apparent that Eric and Clive Watts, the most prominent local players for many years, were greatly missed, following their retirement.
Within a minute of the opening the Auckland forwards ran through the defence for Lawry to score. In a fast Wellington attack Edwards 'crashed in a fast shot which was unlucky to hit the post. After the Auckland goalkeeper had made several saves, Bramwell scored from a scramble in the mouth of the goal, following a penalty corner. A free hit on the edge of the circle enabled Wheatley to score with a hard shoulder-high shot.
In the second half Robertson, the Auckland centre-half, scored from a penalty corner, and following a' fast right-flank movement Roughton scored after Moore had saved his first shot. At this stage Auckland were definitely superior. Finally Chapman scooped the pall into the top of the net, making the final score: Auckland .4, Wellington 2.
