FIRE RISK

SAFEGUARDING LIFE

! The president, Mr. W. E. Arnold, presided over a recent meeting of the Faculty of Insurance, when Mr. F. F Gilmore, chief electrical inspector to the Fire Underwriters' Association delivered a lecture on "Fire Hazards." The speaker stressed the fact that destruction of property by fire was inseparable from danger to life and specially mentioned the importance of enclosing lift wells and stairs so that occupants may safely pass'through the smoke and flames to safety. No definite rules could be laid down for safety measures, for what was suitable an one type of building might not be suitable in another. Necessarily, safety precautions varied according to the purposes to which a building was put. Mr. Gilmore pointed out deficiencies in the ordinary outside fire escape and.appealed to those present for their concerted effort towards obtaining more adequate safeguards to life from fire in buildings.
