He is one of the fines.t athletes produced by the Air Force, which he joined as an aircraftman. He is now a pilotoflicer. . . The team, which critics declare is the finest Britain has ever sent.to an Olympic Games, includes'the majority of those who were placed in the competitions in the championships., with the best losers where the first three were not wholly British. . ■
A. W. Sweeny, C. B. Holmes, and A. Pennington (Oxford University) will, compete in the 100 and 200 metres; A. K. G. Brown, G. L. Rampling, and W. Roberts in the 400 metres; J. V. Powell, E. R. Handley, and B. McCabe in the 800 metres; S. C. Wooderson, R. Graham, and J. Comes in the 1500 metres; P. D. Ward, A..V. Reese, and F. Close in the 5000 metres; J. A. Burns, J. Eaton, and J. Potts in the 10,000 metres; D. M. Robertson, E. Harper, and A. Norris in the marathon; D. O. Finlay, jA. G. Pilbrow, and J. St. L. Thornton in the 110 metres hurdles; J. Sheffield in the 400 metres hurdles; S. R. West in the high jump; G. Y. Traynor in the long jump; E. Boyce in the hop, step, and jump; and F. R. Webster in the pole vault.
