BULLER GORGE

COMPLETION OF LINE

WORK IN PROGRESS

Work on the uncompleted Westport-1 Inangahua railway line was resumed last week, according to a Westport report, which states that on Thursday last twenty men were on the job arid that it was expected that by today at least 50 men would he at work.

The old camps which still remain on the job are being repaired and additional, camps are to be erected. When the work was closed down late in 1931 it was in a well organised and fully "furnished state, but much has to bs done before the full complement of men necessary for the prosecution of the work can again be established and equipped. . ■ •• ; •

On Wednesday last Mr. A. C. Bascand, assistant Public Works engineer, accompanied the district, engineer (Mr. R. T. Smith) and the Department's mechanical engineer from Wellington on a close inspection of the line in order to decide on the plant and machinery which will now be required for the work, much of which in all probability will take some two or three months to secure.

Mr. A. G. Park has been appointed as Mr. Bascand's assistant in charge of the work, but, although he accompanied the inspecting party over the work, he will not be able to relinquish his present duties for a week or two yet. Mr. Park is at present attached to the Christchurch office of the Department. He recently supervised the construction of the large reinforced concrete bridge over the Clutha River at Balclutha on the main highway between Dunedin and Invercargill. Mr. Park was previously associated with Mr. Bascand on the Napier-Wairoa railway construction work. Mr. H. H. Hart, formerly of the Public Works Department, Greymouth, and Mr. Bert Williams have been transferred to Westport.

There have been many inquiries for employment on the railway, but only physically fit and otherwise satisfactory men will be accepted. Also, applicants must be prepared to bach, for which purpose they will require to find all their own requisites.
