! LIKELY NOVICE JUMPER (Special to the "Evenlnu Post/O I ' DUNEDIN, June 18. The sleety rain that followed the frost at Wingatui this morning made the conditions as. cold as one can recollect for watching track proceedings. Naturally, trainers, were tardy in commencing business, which was itself of a slow order. ~ , The nature of this meeting makes the efforts by the jumpers of most importance, but so far track attenders have not been treated to much. This morning the novice Te Ahuarangl was paired with Qumopal -in a round over the schooling steeplechase country. The effort by both horses enlightened a dull morning, especially Te Ahuarangi's eut jumping of his companion at most of the fences. He was ridden by W. Cooper, who will have the mount in the Tahuna Steeplechase. On the flat the gallop on the plough bv Golden King and Salmo Salar, Provincial Handicap candidates, was watched with interest. At the finish of their mile in lmin 50 3-ssec, Golden King was in front .and was . going away. He has not disappointed in any of his track gallops and promises to run well if the going does not become too soft. At present the course pro!per is.good, but any further rain might SP Amy "Johnson has not been seen in much fast work, but she has thrived on the kind that has been allotted hei. She looks like going a good race in the Provincial Handicap. •Rotowai walked off decidedly sore after a gallop with Parasang this morn""southland visitors in Signaller Parasane, Dunmure, Qulnopal, and nay Duke, the last-named looking very well, arid northern visitors in Wykemist, Vocal, and Braw Lad have arrived.

TURF NEWS IN BRIEF Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting will be taken up till 8 o'clock this evening. Racing on the second day at Napier Park will commence at 11.30 a.m., instead of noon, tomorrow, so as to afford patrons an opportunity of witnessing a representative football match. According to, a Riccarton . report, Greek Gold is now to fulfil his Dunedin engagements, and he left Christchurch in company with Dollar Bin, Vahu, and Royal Gallant yesterday. The Trentham horseman G. Ridgway has been engaged by H. Nurse to ride Polydora in jumping events later in the winter, commencing at the Wellington Meeting. . The mare is to race on the flat at Durtedin. ' After a lengthy spell, the result of an injury he received shortly after Christmas, Tybalt has resumed work at Ellerslie under the charge of his trainer, A. McCurdy. He looks in good order to go ahead with a preparation, but he may not be required to do anything serious for some time yet. A yearling filly owned by Mr. G. Gould is a recent addition to J. S. Shaw's stable at Riccarton. She is by Lord Warden from Dutch Money, a Paper Money mare from Dutch Clock, haft-sister to the well-performed Count Cavour. The Tauranga Cup candidate Te Hai is reported to have freshened up nicely since racing at the Auckland Meeting. He ran a good race in the Cornwall Handicap and with his light impost in the Opotiki Cup, he should be prominent throughout. He will be ridden by N. Vaughan. Further additions to F. W. Davis's already large team of youngsters are two from Mr T. H. Lowry's Okawa Stud. A typical Hunting Song is the brown colt from Fintry, a daughter of Desert Gold by Chief Ruler. The other is a half-sister by Hunting Song to Gold Trail, and she is regarded as one of the most attractive rising two-year-old fillies seen this season. The Wanganui racecourse and Spriggens Park (the Rugby ground) are on adjoining reserves. Thus patrons of the Wanganui-Rangitikei representative Rugby match on the King's Birthday will be enabled to pass through from that ground to the racecourse with a minimum of delay. The football match is expected to conclude just before 12 noon, so that patrons may see the first race of the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting. The dual attraction is expected to draw many patrons of Rugby, and racing to Wanganui.
