BIRTHDAY RACING CARNIVAL

OPENING OF HOLIDAY MEETINGS

(By "Raneatira.")

The new King's birthday brings in a changed set of race meetings this year, with the Dunedin Jockey Club the only club to retain the holiday date. The fresh holiday fixtures will by the Wanganui Jockey Club, the Napier Park Racing Club, and the Opotiki Jockey Club (at Tauranga), and by the Auckland Trotting Club in the light-harness realm. All -these meetings except the Opotiki commence tomorrow, the five clubs will race on Tuesday (the holiday), and the'Dunedin Meeting will be concluded next Wednesday. Of particular interest to Wellington sportsmen is the Wanganui Meeting, as it is within comfortable range of the city.

With the good, fields that have been 'secured for the opening day of the Waniiahui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting at Wanganui tomorrow, there is .plenty.:of material to furnish.. racing of a high-standard, and the day's result should be nipst satisfactory for the club. .NAPIER PARK RACES

USEFUL FIELDS ENCAGED

Better fields than, paraded at Hastings last week have accepted for the opening day of the Napier Park Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Greenmeadows tomorrow, and there is a particularly large : array in the maiden event. There are some fresh horses in most of the races, but form as shown last week may be the deciding factor in the majority of.cases. After recent rain the track is likely to be on the heavy side. .. ..■ ■ ■ The club is conducting the. betting as usual on the single-pool system. The fields and a brief review of the form , are as follows: — MOTEO HACK. HUBDLE RACE HANDICAP, . ■••■ . ■ £85;:l>/2 miles. : •• ; Journet .... 11- 5 Count Willonyx 9 12 John Charles ;1011 Manifesto ~-..• 9 8 ii.i-19 8 Stmehong ■■-..■ 9 0 Curie ........ 10 s'Royal Bengal . 9 0 'Blue Bpy '■~. 10 2 Lord Hereford . 9 0 ■Blue Tiger .... 10 6 ' ; j

As Blue rioy led all the way to win the Hawke'sflay Hurdles last week he must again/be hard to beat, in the Moteo Hack Hurdles, run over a quar-ter-mile shorter distance. Journet and t Count Willonyx showed good form also last week, and Blue Tiger and John i Charles are newcomers with an aptitude at the game, An interesting run"ner will be Curie, who is well handicapped for a class'horse on the flat. Emotion did not flatter last week but will improve before long, and so, may Lord Hereford. A favoured pair are likely to be Blue Boy and Blue Tiger. 12.40

Luck in the draw and in the running in so large a field of novices will play an important part in the Maiden Scurry. Black Frost, Golden Ridge, Lucullus Lad, and Silver Tide may be the best favoured of tjie"older horses, and Le Toquet is a prospect among the two-year-olds. Jay Bird is ariother who has a reputation for pace. It is a. difficult issue to analyse, ; but two who promise ta do well are Black Frost and Golden Ridge.

Though she-won so easily over a shorter distance Mate Han may find an increase of 111b in impost too-much.tQ surmount in the-Meanee Hack Handicap. If First Chapter stays' for the meeting he should have an excellent chance here. ; Caen is likely to have benefited witlj her race at Hastings, and "De "Friend was- very consistent on the; East: Coast; autumn circuit. Royal Feastlatid Hunter's Morn are others who will: -Mil: for attention. A good pair may be First Chapter and Gaen'or Dβ: Friend: ■■ .:, ■ . \M'";'',;■ '■y'v.^^iV"-.'■■. --■ . ■' '■■■■ NAPIER STEEPLECHASE•. HANDICAP, £ 125; ■v - . ». The should be well contested*, even though the field is small,- lor there is not much to choose among: them. Royal Banquet missed his engagements at Hastings, but if produced; tomorrow he is likely to play a prominent part, for he gives a lot ol promise in his new role. Cotsfleld, Dozie, and Strome are the form horses from Hastings, and if Battleground has recovered from his recent setback he is also a prospect on Marton running. A favoured pair may be Royal Banquet and Cotsfleld (or Dozie), 2.30 . LADIES' HANDICAP, £70: l>4 miles. Sunny Sky .... 12 4 Llyn Dhu ... 11 0 The Grasper ~ 12 2 Tahoma 10 12 Royal Shift „ 11 4 Sunny Sky and The Grasper look like-fighting last week's battle over again in the Ladies' Handicap, with 'gentlemen riders" in the saddle.- Royal Shift and. Tahoma, who have recently also been placed, the former just beaten in a similar race at Waipukurau, will nevertheless; also be supported. Llyn Dhu.was good enough once but hfcs not faced for nearly six years. The favourites promise to be Sunny Sky and The Grasper. .

FLYING HANDICAP, .S100; 6 furlongs. Slippery .... 9 3 Lavina 8 5 Bodyline .... 9 1 Cawbetsn ...,'S 2 Hunting Jay .. 8 12 Royal Bengal ..8 0 Passion Flower 8 10 Quake 8 p Mata Hari ...810.

Several.of the field for the Flying Handicap have been recent winners, but the most attractive among them has been Bodyline. syhQ .scored a double success facilely at Otaki and is a consistent horse when in form. Passion Flower won on the first day last week, and the stable elect, Slippery or Lavina, is also liable to. play: a part in the finish. It is a race that any horse engaged might win, but the best on.form look tot be Bodyline and Slippery (or Lavina).

SETTIEUS? BACK HANDICAP, £85; 1 wile. dranrale'. ..'. 9 6 Trailer ...... 8 5 Blygaln ...... 813 Toi-urn ...... 8 3 Blue darter ..8 13 Sybllsong .. 8 0 Muter Cykloii 811 Royal Dash .. 8 0

Last week's" winners,- Granvale and Master Cyklon, will be suited by the distance of the Settlers' Hack Handicap, and the better of the pair may be the topweight. Trailer, a maiden win-i ner last week, failed to rise to hack class on the second day, and likelier prospects look to be the unlucky Blue Garter and Blygain, who both hang on well A pair who may justify support are Granvale and Blue Garter.

LIKELY OPOTIKI CHANCE Two Of R. S.Bagby'3 charges, Black Marlin and Lord val, were schooled this week at Ellerslie. Ridden by A. Moore, they each negotiated four hurdles and save good displays. Black Marlin is engaged in the Otara Hurdles at Tauranga, and Lord Val, who has made good progress in recent weeks, is engaged in the Opotiki Cup. Black Marlin contested only one race at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting, running fourth in the Campbell Hurdles, which was won in record time by Jolly Beggar, and if produced on Tuesday he should perform well against the class he will encounter. •
