SPLENDID DEFENCE

ENGLISH LEAGUE TEAM

QUEENSLAND BEATEN

BRISBANE, June 13,

The English Rugby League team defeated Queensland by 19 points to 4 today in a game which, while not a brilliant spectacle, revealed the magnificent cover defence of the visitors and the consistency of Hodgson's goal kicking. Queensland were quite unable to make any headway against the defence, their few opportunities falling down through faulty handling.

Brogden cut through close to a scrum in scoring England's first try, which Hodgson converted. The baby of the team, Edwards, on the right wing, completed a brilliant move initiated by Brough when he picked up from a clevfcr punt by Brogden and streaked for the line. Brough, who gave a masterly display at full-back, was again in the picture when he co-oper-ated with Belshaw and Watkins and enabled the winger. Smith, to score in the corner. Hodgson's value to the side was shown by his five goals, three of which were from half-way. DISAPPOINTING FIRST HALF. In the first half, play was rather disappointing, England apparently being anxious to test the strength of the Queenslanders before giving anything away. With the score 11-4 in their favour at half-time, however, and Edwards's try coming within a few minutes, they realised they had the game in their hands. During the closing stages of play the visitors exploited open football with the threequarters throwing the ball about beautifully. Brough often chimed in, there being occasions when he was right in the forefront of movements only a few feet from the line. He proved today that he is just as entertaining as Sullivan. Official figures show a gate of £2492, with a crowd of 23,684. The teams were:— i England.—J. Brough, A. Edwards, A. J. Risman, W. Beishaw, S. Smith. S. Brogden, W. Watkins, M. Beverley. L. A. Troup. M. Hodgson, N. Silcoc!c. T. Armitt, H. Woods.

Queensland. —W. Smith, H. Robison, W. Malion, J. Reardon, L. Hudson, V. Hey, F. Gilbert, P. Madsen, J. Little, W. Law, L. Heidke, W. Ryan, P. Hickey.

Arkwright was chosen for the English team but had to drop out because a leg injury was still too sore for him to play. |
