POSTSCRIPTS

Chronicle and ComrnetA

By Percy Fuice.

! Scotch! From 4YA Duncdin: "It is line in Dunedin this morning, but is 'raining slightly"! C.G.T. Bertrand Russell says that if a man and a girl love each other that's their business. Unless tliey live in a village; then it's evci-ybody's business. Anon.—We have just a suspicion that the fifteen minutes' applause that greeted Mr. Hoover at the Republican Convention was an item on the agenda paper. -KSome of the stones say that French and German troops are within rifle shot of one another; others, within pistol shot. The need of the times if to keep some fool from trying to find

out which is right. * » • "E.P." heading:— CHILEAN SAW FLY, Well, what if he did? « * « REMEMBER THIS ONE?-' The following tale explains things from an entirely different angle, and some of your readers would no doubt like to know as much as I do now. A doctor, an architect, and a politician dining together one evening entered into a controversy anent the age that their respective professions dated back to. Said the doctor: "It is written that Eve was created from one of Adam's ribs, a surgical job at very early date, which gives us tha right to claim the oldest profession." Said the architect: "It is written before that, that order was created out of Chaos and Confusion, and only an architect could have done that job." Then up spake the politician. Said he: "Gentlemen, both your claims are no doubt very good, but have you ever stopped t-o think who made the Chaos and Confusion?" "BELIEVE-ME-NOT." ■ * «■" «■ GUERRILLA WAR? According to Haile Selassie's Foreign Minister the war is not over yet. There may be something in the warning, in spite of the fact thjt the Italians are preparing the country for settlement. But it must not be forgotten that due to well-planned long-sustained guerrilla tactics on the part of the tribes, it took Italy over 20 years to make Libya completely her own. Again, late last month, the British authorities at Khartoum reported that followers of Selassie had established an Ethiopian "Government" in the Gore region. Gore is about 250 miles south-west of Addis Ababa. ' This report was confirmed by the British Consul in the Gore district. The British Consul said large numbers of Ethiopian troops and Galla warriors returning from the war zones were streaming into the Gore region. He added that complete order reigned throughout the territory. ROTORUA! Your boiling-down hint is good, but if you're going to boil a thing too long you might just as well cremate it in the first place and save the gaa. Is the following boiled sufficiently?:— Rotorua (N.Z. tour), Also cure —That's the lure, But you'll rue 'er, It's a stewer —Blanlcy hot! Sulphuric smells , And damned deep wells, Hot bubbling hells . Where steam dispels And mud upswells, Earth's crust all cells Gone to rot! Baths hot and cold. Where young and old Of every mould Are boiled, and rolled In mud, I'm told, Perhaps consoled —P'raps not! Long motor rides, Fat tattooed guides, And boiling tides. Sore sun-baked hides And parboiled sides; The Guide confides Quite a lot! The Maoris cling Where geysers fling Hot jets that sting, Their dinners bring, Sit in a ring And watch the spring Boil the potl The town's a freak; Seems barefaced cheek To choose a streak Where lavas leak, Rocks boil and squeak, And then grow sleek On the spot! R.L.C. | * -> * HOWITZER'S BROADCAST. The system we laid down early ip the season has been scrapped. The teami now walk on to the ground together, and now it's straight-out guessing to find the winner. Athletic were prime favourites on Saturday, but the Poneke lived up to their Park reputation; or maybe we should say that they regained some c: their kick. Martyn can hold his . head up with most of the old club's "booters," not excluding Ted King, but probably excepting Billy Wallace. No use calling it a "boil-over" or reversal of form—just 1936 football. Tha field is now rounding the far bene*, and the leaders are joined by Johnsonville and St. Pat's Old Boys, and some of them are going to find the pace solid. Athletic got away with one of Jack Shearer's old kick-oft' kicks. Jackie Griffiths's hand (and feet) made a big impression on the blue and blacks. One would have liked to hear the thoughts of Wells, Wales, Guy, and company. Poneke now take their turn aloft with Old Boys, while Wellington and Petone are fast making up ground. No doubt, cach wilt have a turn on the top rung before the season closes. Our selector is gamer than Mr. Mere* dith. Tindill, without a trial at halfback for two seasons, has been chosen to fill that post when the local lids go to TaranaJti to discuss . . . guaranteed prices? We can't find out yet what Mark thinks of Jackie Griffiths, but that should come later. Rugby, League, and Soccer were all on trial on Saturday, and no doubt the basketballers were triers too. This here golf is making a big hole in our football ranks. Probably Athletic need a change of air. Prince of Wales Park was the scene of the season's greatest game. A record gate for this ground, and were the Scottics absent in large numbers? We'll say they were not! Fleming, the Eastbourne skipper, put up a score that will be hard to beat: 17 points puts his old club mate, Fuller, in the shade. Athletic will be found at the old ad» dress next Saturday when the Nichollf hopes come to town to give 'em til# once over.
