SOUTHERLY CHANGE COMING

Special forecast for Wellington:— Light and variable winds at first, but strong southerlics setting in by tomorrow. Weather unsettled, dull and misty, and with rain at times. Colder temperatures tomorrow.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for variable and light to moderate winds at first, but a change to strong southerlies is probable within about twenty-four hours. The weather will be mainly cloudy to overcast, with mist or fog in many places. Intermittent rain is probable with some heavy falls, and with snow on the high levels. Temperatures will be colder tomorrow.

On Saturday the anticyclone covering the North Island was responsible for lair to fine weather generally, and moderate to fresh northerly winds prevailed.' During the night, however, a moderate westerly depression crossed the Dominion, and the latter lias since been followed by another depression, shallow but more complex in character. Scattered rain fell in the South Island and in the far north on Saturday night, and since Sunday morning the weather has been dull and misty with more general _ rain spread over most of the Dominion. Falls have been chiefly light, but there have been a few heavy ones on the west coast of the South Island. Temperatures have been mild. Winds by this morning had become more variable in direction and were generally only light in force. Auckland's weather on Saturday was fair to cloudy with a light easterly wind. Sunday's weather was dull, showery, and mild, 18 points of rain being recorded. A north-easterly breeze prevailed yesterday, but by 9 a.m. today this had changed to a light south-south-westerly, the weather being misty.

Although mostly cloudy in Wellington on Saturday, the day was a pleasant one with a light breeze from the north-north-west. Sunday was cloudy and the cloud thickened, misty rain beginning to fall about noon and continuing intermittently throughout the remainder of the day and last night. A. northerly breeze prevailed yesterday, but since about 8.30 p.m. it has been practically calm. Hours of bright sunshine registered on Saturday and Sunday totalled 3.7 and 0.9 respectively, while the rainfall both at Kelburn and in Lower Hutt totalled 23 points. The weather in Christchurch on Saturday was fair but mostly cloudy with a keen and fresh north-easterly wind. Sunday morning was dull and showery, the wind changing during the afternoon to a fresh south-westerly, but only one point of rain was recorded. It was calm and foggy there this morning. Dunedin had fair to cloudy weather on Saturday, a northerly breeze changing to the south-west during the night. Rain began to fall about 6 a.m. yesterday, and Sunday's weather was dull with a few light showers falling in the morning, the wind having remained in the south-west. The total fall of rain was one of 16 points. Since last night the weather in the southern city has been fair and this morning it was practically calm.
