BOROUGH COUNCIL BALL

Nikau palms, bush foliage, and paper streamers decorated tlte dance hall of the King George Theatre at Lower Hutt on the occasion of the annual Borough Council baJJ, With a very good attendance in spite of the stormy weather, the Lower Hutt Free Kindergarten Association and the District Nurse Fund should benefit largely from the proceeds.

The Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews) made a brief speech, thanking all those on the council stall who had worked to make the evening a success.

Grimwood. Dorctte Wilkie Scholarship. Miss Honour Fry, the 18-year-old daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. H. E. IC. Fry, of the Vicarage, Lower Hutt, has just been notified that she is the winner of the Dorette Wilkie Scholarship at the Chelsea Physical Training College, England. The scholarship, which is open to any girl in the British Empire who has the necessary ability, personality, and attainments, entitles its possessor to three years of training at the college. Miss Fry, who is this year head prefect at Marsden College and has captained her house for the past two years, was warmly recommended for the scholarship, and it is greatly to her credit that she has won it. She leaves for England shortly, and will commence her training at Chelsea in September of this year. Conditions Abroad. At a well-attended meeting of the Hutt Valley Women's Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, Mrs. Peter Fraser spoke most interestingly of social and industrial conditions abroad. She touched particularly upon the reforms evident in Ireland and England, especially in matters of health, housing and education. . Mrs. Fraser also visited India, and spoke of the tremendous advancement in the living conditions and social reforms of that country. She studied welfare work among women and girls in London, and attended a Trades Union Congress at Brighton. At the concluJ siori of her talk, Mrs. Fraser was presented with a gift parcel, and posies were gitfen to Mrs. Walter Nash, Mrs. M. Dowse (president and chairwoman), and to Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Logie (junior), who provided musical entertainment. Social Evening:. The committee of the' Parents' Association of the Hutt Valley High School held a very successful social for the benefit of the school funds. Mr. J. B. Grey was M.C., and community singing, conducted^ by Mr. H. Saunders, was interspersed with concert items, elocutionary items by Mr. Errol Muir, and dances by Miss Eva Draper's pupils. Singers on the programme were Mrs. Noel Taylor and Mrs. Lock. Included in the audience were Mr. and Mrs. J. ! N. Millard, Mrs. J.. S. Hunter, Mr. and | Mrs. Dalgleish, Mr, W. Mason, Mr. and i Mrs. Ransom, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Robertson, Captain and Mrs Bowen, Dr. and Mrs. Butchers, Mr. and Mrs. R. Lowry, and Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hodge. "Happy Hundred" Club. An open fire, flowers, and radiators made the R.S.A. clubroom appear very welcoming for the first seasonal dance of the "Happy Hundred" Club. The guests were received by the official host and hostess, Dr. and Mrs. Welton Hogg. Mrs. Hogg wore wine velvet, and was assisted by other committee members, comprising Mr. E. F. Rothwell .(secretary), Mr. and Mrs. J. McNaught (the latter in green floral silk), Mrs. E. Lund (floral marocain), Mrs. M. J. Daniel, and Messrs. H. Maddock, J. P. Phillipps, and E. J. Aim. The guests included Mrs. Aim (who wore blue matalasse),'Mrs. Rothwell (spotted georgette), Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Ikin (the latter in black' lace), Dr. and Mrs. Hickey (black velvet). Miss B. Skeet (powder-blue lace), Mrs. H. Maddock (parchment satin), Mr. and Mrs, K. Caverhill, Captain and Mrs. Gentry (floral taffeta), Mr. and Mrs. W. Hay, Mr. and Mrs. D. J.
