FAILURE TO REPORT
TRUCK-DRIVER'S OFFENCE
An accident which occurred in Lambton Quay on April 17 resulted in the appearance of Horace Mitchell Hartwell before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today, to answer 'to charges of having no licence and of failing to report to the police after an accident. ~ ■ Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach said that the defendant, who was driving a truck, knocked down a small boy in Lambton Quay, causing injuries to his head and leg necessitating the attention of specialists. After the accident the defendant took the boy and his mother to a doctor, but did not report the matter to the police. It was only after an exhaustive search that the defendant could be found when the mother told the police three days after 'the accident she had no idea of the man's name and address. Mr. P. Verschaffelt, who appeared for the defendant, said that the defendant did everything possible' after the accident. He was under the impression that the accident was not serious. At the time of the mishap he had no licence, but he had held one previously. The defendant was convicted and fined 10s and costs for having no licence, and 20s and costs for failing to ' report."'
