FRENCH CLUB

ENJOYABLE REUNION An enjoyable programme was arranged for the last reunion of the Cercle Francais by Miss Allison Mackay, assistant scretary. Two trios contributed by Messrs. Ayson anc Woodward and Dr. Keys (violin, 'cello and piano) were much appreciated Mr. Balham, president, gave a monologue, "Blackboule au Conservatoire,' which caused continual laughter. Madame Finlayson recited "L'hirondelle du Bouddha" (Francois Coppee), with hei usual charm, and responded to a warm encore. Miss Ruth Reid's violin solo, "Spanish Dance," by Granados (accompanied by Miss L. Vondersloot) was also encored, as was the dance duo oi Misses Frances Muter and Coralie Smythson ("Kate Greenaway Polka"). Special interest attached to the programme as members were given an opportunity of judging the quality of some fine records just acquired by the club. These'are recordings by artists of the Comedie Francaise. Excerpts from "Les Plaideurs" (Racine) were given. This feature received great attention, and it is hoped there will be opportunity for hearing some excerpts at each reunion. Miss Mackay is to be congratulated upon having arranged for the inclusion of these recordings in her entertainment. Mr. J. E. Butler attended to this part of the proceedings, an dhas charge of the series of records. Another matter of interest was an announcement made by the president regarding the evening reception to be given by the club in honour of the visit of the French sloop Savorgnan de Brazza.
