BLAZE AT CONVENT

BRIGADE'S GOOD WORK (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, This Day. The Are brigade received a call at 7.15 this morning to a fire at St. Joseph's Convent, Manga whare. A full muster of the brigade responded promptly. The fire started in a washhouse and spread along the covered way into the back portions of the convent building. A bathroom and pantry were damaged outside the walls of the main building and the washhouse was a total loss. Fortunately there was an absence of wind, otherwise the task of the brigade would have been much more difficult. Two leads were taken from the main road, a distance of 400 yards, and another lead from Logan Street, using the high-pressure pump on the engine. A good pressure was immediately available and the flames were quickly under control. The building and its contents are covered by insurance but the amounts are not available at present. The five Sisters and five boarders living on the premises were at early Mass. The building was officially opened by the late Bishop Lenihan in December, 1907.
