ILLUMINATED ADDRESS

FAMOUS STARS' THANKS

A cablegram of thanks to their admirers -who sent them--an illuminated address' has been received in Welling-; ton from Jessie Matthews and Sonnie Hale,; the ■ famous English stars of stage and screen. ■ The address was taken to England by Captain A. V. Hale Monro, who recently retired from service'-with the Wellington Harbour Board. Captain Hale Monro is uncle to Binnie and Sonnie Hale,' and when he was about to leave for England after his retirement, Mr. Neil Edgcfr, manager of the Plaza Theatre, hit on the plan of sending an illuminated address to Sonnie Hale and Jessie Matthews (Mrs. Sonnie Hale) as a testimony of the admirationof the people of Wellington. Consequently the address was draft-, ed by a city journalist and illuminated, being displayed in the lobby of the theatre about the time of screening of the film "First a Girl," in which Jessie Matthews had a spectacular role. Patrons of the theatre were invited to sign the address, and many did-so.-Now Jlr. Edgar has received from London a cablegram which reads: "Many thanks to our friends in Wellington, New Zealand, for the . good wishes and kind thoughts conveyed in the illuminated address presented to us by our uncle, Captain Hale Monro/ and thanks to you personally for the trouble, and organisation that ■ must have gone to the sending of this gift. Best wishes.—Jessie Matthews and Sonnie Hale."
