DICKENS FELLOWSHIP
A PICKWICK EVENING
There was a very good attendance of members and friends at the April meeting of the Dickfens Fellowship, held recently in Charming Hall. Captain M. S. Galloway (president) occupied the chair, and during the evening gave much pleasure with a wellprepared and interesting paper, "The Origin of Pickwick Papers." He was warmly congratulated for his contribution to a good programme.
Another particularly good reading from "Pickwick Papers" was given by Mr. C. Smythe, always a favourite with the Fellowship members on account of the excellence of his readings. A very good character costume sketch was presented also—"The Love Affairs of the Spinster Aunt."' Mrs. E. Smythe played "Miss Wardle," Mr. E. Bush "Mr. Tupman," Mrs. Laurence "Deaf Old Lady," Mr. A. Prince "Mr. Jingle," and Rene Lajbourn "Fat Boy." Excellent characterisation in each part combined in making this sketch a success in every way, and each performer received well-merited applause.
A good reading, "Sam's Valentine," caused much laughter and was well applauded and appreciated by all present, the parts being taken by Mr. A. Prince and Mr. G. Shakes, Mrs, M. Page ably supporting a minor role. Songs by Miss L. Davison gave much pleasure. - Mrs. Price accompanied, and also officiated at the piano for the usual Fellowship community songs. During the evening the president welcomed Mrs, Hall, a. Christchurch Fellowship member, v who with her family has come to reside in Wellington. Mrs. Hall gave some interesting news regarding various Fellowship centres in Australia and New Zealand. The National Anthem was sung.
