PAKANUI'S SEQUENCE

STIFF ELLERSLIE TRIAL

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. If Pakanui tries to win his ninth consecutive race at Ellerslie on Monday he will go close to doing it, provided the right race is selected for him. Should his owner fly high and go for classic honours, however, the speedy Hunting Song three-year-old might be found wanting, for the Great Northern St. Leger seems to be a match once again between Greek Shepherd (the potential winner) and Entail, with Floodtide and Entheos thrown in for good measure as likely to upset calculations.

The brilliant Pakanui can be placed, to win on Monday all right, for he is also in the open sprint,- the Huia Handicap. That race will be right in Pakanui's favour, unless he gets hampered in the early shuffle making the slight climb away from the barrier and by the right-handed way of racing. Apart from this it will take a really good sprinter to beat him. It is understood that this is to be his next race.

The Simon-pure sprinters have no say in today's bill of fare at Ellerslie, for they have been forced into the Easter Handicap, one mile. However, their turn comes on Monday afternoon and there will be plenty of runners. So Pakanui will be tested severely, but if not overburdened his sequence may be carried on. another step. Among the fresh horses on Mon-

day that he will find excellent tryingput tackle are others of his own' age in recent winners such as Oratory, Triune, and Whirling, as well as older horses such as Lordly Knight and Belkyrian. Then the form exposed in the Easter Handicap by the sprinters may cause last-minute changes in calculations, for it has been found that the Easter Handicap winner sometimes goes well in the open sprint on tha second day. Pakanui is also engaged in the sprint events at Avondale next weekend, and therefore his showing on Monday, if reserved as expected for the sprint, will be followed with considerable interest.
