SWIMMING
HEATS DECIDED
The heats of several swimming events were decided this morning at the Thorndon Baths before a fair following from all four universities .
The only Victoria College representative to reach a final was Miss M. Pilcher, who was narrowly beaten for first place 'in the second heat of the 50 yards women's championship, and who also gained second place in the first heat of the 100 yards women's championship.
The results in detail are as follows, all events being New Zealand University championships:—
Women's 50 yards freestyle.—First heat: C. Lang (Otago), 1; L. Blank (Canterbury), Z. Time, 34 l-ssec. Second heat: B. Kinder (Otago), 1; M. Pilcher (Victoria), 2. Time, 36sec.
Men's 100 yards freestyle.—First heat: M. Butterick (Canterbury), 1; J. H. Neville (Otago), 2. Time, '64sec. Second heat: D. Munro (Auckland), 1; P. F. Foote (Otago), 2. Time, 64 2-ssec.
Men's 220 yards freestyle.—First heat: M. Butterick (Canterbury), 1; P. F. Foote (Otago), 2. Time, 2min 47 l-'ssec. Second heat: J. H. Neville (Otago), 1; T. F. Haughey (Auckland), 2. Time, 2min 57 2-ssec.
Women's 100 yards freestyle.—First heat: H. Rees-Jones (Otago), 1; M. Pilcher (Victoria), 2.^ "Time, 86sec. Second heat: C. Lang (Otago), 1; N. McLeod (Auckland), 2. Time, 82 3-5 sec.
