ATHLETICS

EECOEDS BBOKEN

THIS MORNING'S EVENTS

Ground and weather conditions were such at the Basin Reserve this morn-

ing that it was a pity the athletics

section of the New Zealand University tournament could not have been completed. The arrangements, however, were to decide only some of the events today and also the heats in certain other events, to clear the way for the main part of the programme on Monday afternoon, when the athletics are to be -completed. There were some, excellent performances this morning, including two records and the equalling of the record in a third event, so that the meeting was given a good start.

In the first heat of the 220 yards flat championship J. D. Carmichael (Canterbury College) won comfortably in 22 £ssec, time which was one-fifth of a second better than the New Zealand University circular track record, first made by L. A. Tracy (Victoria College), in 1921 and equalled by L. C. Williams (Auckland) in 1927. J. M. Watt (Otago) won the second heat easily in 23sec, showing good form despite the fact that he has had no competition this season, having recently returned from the New Zealand University Rugby team's tour of Japan. With Carmichael and Watt opposed to one another the final on Monday should be a first-class, contest, and if the weather holds Carmichael's time this morning may well be improved upon. The other record was established by M. V. Blake, also of Canterbury College, with a clearance of 10ft 10 Jin in the pole vault, a new event on the programme for the tournament. The only other competitor was R. L. Vosailagi (Otago), a Fijian, whose besteffort was 9ft 6in. Vosailagi, a stronglybuilt ahtlete and a good all-rounder, showed more than a little skill even though he has had nowhere near the competition of Blake. After getting over the bar at 10ft lOJin. Blake, the present holder of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's title for this event, attempted to better the New Zealand record' of lift 4Jin, but failed.

Both A. T. Anderson (Canterbury College) in the first heat and H. Abraham (Victoria College) in the second heat equalled the New Zealand University record of 26 '2-ssec for the 220 yds low hurdles. The record was established by Anderson in 1935. V. P. BOOT IN THE MILE. Much interest was taken in the appearance of V. P. Boot, the Olympic Games representative, in the one mile championship, but it was obvious from the start that he was not out to attempt a record-breaking performance. Indeed his time of 4min 28sec was slow for him, but apart from the fact that there was no one in the field to draw the best out of him, he has not trained for the mile since the New Zealand championship meeting at Dunedin at the end of February and also in the early stages of the race he was; content to trail the other competitors. He did not clap on the pace until the final lap when he ran away from the others to win comfortably by about 40 yards. L. S. Black (Victoria College), who replaced M. O'Connor, was second, with B. W. NiXon (Otago University) close up on him, third. Boot's time of tain 28sec was three seconds slower than that registered when A. R. Wilson (Wellington) narrowly beat him at the Basin Reserve in windy weather- last month, and 1 l-ssec slower than A. D. Priestly's New Zealand University record. Had he not lagged behind early in the race, thereby losing valuable seconds, he would no doubt have beaten that record. Boot is among the entrants for the 880 yds championship on Monday afternoon, and as this is regarded, as his best distance and there is the possibility of his having decided today to reserve himself for this for a special effort, he will again attract much attention.

Owing to competitors having dropped out, heats which were to have been held this morning were dispensed with in the 440 yds hurdles championship and the 440 yds flat championship. These events are to be decided on Monday afternoon.

Judged on performances this morning and the prospects for Monday the contest for the Athletic Shield would appear to lie between Canterbury College and Otago University College. Otago won the shield last year. Two points are awarded for each first place and one for each second. In the four

finals this morning Canterbury scored seven points, Otago two, Auckland two, and Victoria College one. THE RESULTS.
