IMPROVED SHOWINGS

ARCTIC KING AND MIGHT

TRENTHAM TRACK TRIALS

(By "Rangatira.")

The final work of the Easter candidates on the Trentham track this morning was interesting as disclosing considerable improvement in some horses who recently have been galloping poorly. In this category were the two Great Autumn aspirants, Might and Arctic King, both of whom gave trials that restored their prestige for the big Riccarton handicap event.

The weather was again brilliantly fine, and the conditions were ideal for working. Both the trial grass and the plough tracks were in use. ON THE PLOUGH. Might (S. R. Farland) and Arctic King (P. Burgess) were accompanied over a mile by After Money, (S. Wilson), and they led the mare throughout, Might, under his light weight, finishing on to win the gallop by a length from Arctic King, with After Money two lengths away, the time being lmin 43 3-ssec for. the full distance and 52 4-ssec for the last half-mile. Arctic King was particularly pleasing, responding to tlie vigour of a strong horseman, whereas previously he has been loafing on a stable apprentice. After Money was favouring a leg afterwards, but she has been previously troubled.

Sunee (E. Rosewarne) was running away two lengths in front of Good Sun (L. Nesbitt) after traversing half a mile in 50sec. The Sandwich Man (B. McCauley) was to have galloped a serviceable three furlongs, but his rider held him back and he required 47sec for the distance. Windward (J. McCauley), who has been beating everything recently, ran right away from his stable companion. Gay Val (B. McCauley) over five furlongs in lmin 4sec, the last halfmile in 50 4-ssec. Boomerang (R. Webster) went over half a mile comfortably in 51 l-ssec. Darecourt (Webster) beat Brown Pearl (J. McCauley) by a couple of lengths over six furlongs in lmin 16sec the last half-mile in 51sec. Debham '(Farland), with a big advantage in weight, accounted for Prostration (Wilson) by the same margin over seven furlongs in lmin 28 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 4-ssec, a good gallop. Vinco (Wilson), doing it well but not allowed to loaf after being slowest to start, had to fight till near the post_to beat the maiden Youssipof (B. E. Edwards) by half a length over seven furlongs in lmin 29 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. Cardinal Moon (Rosewarne) went off with the pair but finished four lengths back. Acceptable (R. Smith) ran half a mile along the back in 50sec. He now gallops with a net over his muzzle to check him pulling. Smith will probably be-riding'him on .Saturday. Sea Wrack (Farland) beat Deficit (Wilson) by a couple of lengths over half a mile in 49 3-ssec, but it was Deficits first gallop for a week and he was not unduly pushed into his work. ON THE GRASS. Geitel (L. Faulkiner) ran seven, furlongs comfortably in lmin 34|sec. Gold Vein (J. F. Nicolson) did a similar task. Camilla Horn (Rosewarne) required lmin 9sec for an easy five furv°CMef Ranger (Wilson), who goes south to race at Riccarton, showed better track form by beating off Revival (Rosewarne) by a length, with Chile (P Burgess) two lengths away, after running a smart six furlongs in lmin 16 3-ssec, the last half-mile, in 51 4-ssec. Revival went surprisingly well, and at the pace set Chile could make no impression on the other pair. Galteemore (Farland) also reversed his previous track showing by beating Liane (J. McCauley) by a good length over an attractive half-mile in 48 4-ssec. Sansfoy (R. Hawkes) came away to finish three lengths in front of Kia Tina (B. V. Carruthers) after running six furlongs in lmin 18 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. E Rosewarne has a full book ot mounts at Wairarapa, his list comprising Cardinal Moon, Youssipof, Camilla Horn, Sunee, Good Sun, Revival, Erua, and Pukeko. It is understood on the track that Davistock will definitely be at Tauherenikau and will be ridden by R. Marsh. No riders have yet been secured for Arctic King, Sansfoy, and Chief Ranger in the south.
